Mold in closet Mold that has presented itself from a water loss

When we hear the word mold, our mind automatically jumps to worst possible conclusion. Mold can begin to present itself, depending on the temperature of the moisture, more quickly than normal. That is why it is very important to contact a professional as soon as you notice a water loss. Waiting for material such as drywall to dry out by itself can cause secondary damages and can be even heavier on your pocket when it comes to repairs. Here at SERVPRO of Palos Verdes we take the time to educate our customers on how to prevent further damage to their home as well as assist them in navigating their way through their current loss. Taking the necessary steps and precautions is the best way to ensure the same situation does not occur again. While we cannot always foresee when a loss may occur, we can make sure we stay vigilant in recognizing a loss and acting sooner rather than later.

Always Sunny in California?

exterior wall damage damage to an exterior wall from a rain storm

While Southern California is typically thought of as the place to go where the sun always shines, we are still susceptible to mother nature. Although we may not experience harsh winters with large amounts of snow, we do experience the occasional heavy rainstorm. Often Angelinos are not prepared for the after math of such a storm because we have this pre-notion that the sun will always be out for us. This can cause some major problems when a disaster does occur due to the unforeseen natural occurrences.

Here at SERVPRO of Palos Verdes we are prepared to aid in the water mitigation and restoration needed to get your home back to the way it was before the damage even occurred. Our trained technicians are not only certified to take care of the issues at hand, but they are also knowledgeable in educating those we serve with the necessities on prevention for such circumstances. We try to equip our customers with the proper tools needed to help them in the future foresee the potential hazards or problems, if any, that may arise due to faulty plumbing, water heater issues, etc.

What Do We Do?

Fire Catastrophes

Fire Damage Fire Damage to commercial residence

While California may not be susceptible to harsh winter storms, we are known for our fire catastrophes. California has been in a drought for quite some time which means wildfires are bound to happen. Here at SERVPRO of Palos Verdes our technicians are trained to go into a property that has been damaged by a fire and assess the extent of the damage and the necessary repairs that may be needed.

A fire loss can cause severe damage not only to the surface of the structure, but also to the inner structure of the property. Often, our technicians will need to board up areas where the damage is beyond just cleaning soot. Any loss to a property can be devastating, so making the process as easy as can be for the customer from start to finish of the job is essential. We work closely with the customer and the insurance company to make sure that there is always communication from start to finish. It is important to make sure the customer is aware of every step in the restoration process so when the job is completed there are no surprises. We are here to help the customer in any way possible and want to make sure that when you have a property loss, you can count on our team to make the unfortunate situation into an easy, fast, and uncomplicated experience.

Communication is Key!

Customer Communication Lead technician letting the customer know the scope of the job

Often, we are called out to a home to conduct an inspection and there are many questions the customer has from the start. The main question being, what is involved in the water mitigation process. Here at SERVPRO of Palos Verdes our trained and professional technicians begin by conducting a formal inspection of the water loss and the areas of the property that have been affected. The technicians will use a moisture reader to determine the areas that need drying and will then determine what equipment will need to be placed to effectively dry the home in a timely manner.

While it is important to dry the structure quickly, we also want to make sure everything is done properly and sometimes that can include multiple steps to get to our result. We communicate every step of the process with your insurance company to make sure all approvals have been received and so that they are aware of any necessary procedures that need to take place to complete the job. It is a team effort to get a property back to the original state it was in prior to the disaster ever happening.

Reaching out everywhere

Storage Facility Dehumidifiers that have been setup in a storage facility

While we pride ourselves in being the go-to business locally for all restorative needs, we also want to make sure we can contribute to the needs of our country. So how do we achieve that? Whenever there is a large Storm that has hit a part of our country, we join other franchises from around the states in assisting families and businesses in the affected areas. We will spend months on end in those affected states helping restore properties while working closely with the insurance companies from start to finish. It can be a very difficult and trying time for individuals when a loss has occurred in their home especially on such a large scale from something like a storm.

Often, we see home completely affected leaving us to remove affected material from the entire home stripping it to just the frame. This can be a lengthy process and we try our best to make sure everything is communicated every step of the way not only with the insurance company, but with the customer as well. We want to make sure we are helping ease the loss the customer is enduring by assisting in every way possible on our end.

Biohazard Sterilization

What happens when there is a need for Biohazard Cleanup?

When we think of home cleanup and restoration, we often think of fire or water damage. Many individuals do not realize that it also encompasses biohazard cleanup, which can be quite dangerous when it comes to the pathogen threat. Depending on the spill, like blood, remediation could be more than just a cleanup of using hospital grade cleaning agents. Often, Blood leaves a stain which means it might be possible that our technicians would have to remove and replace the affected section of wall, floor, or ceiling.

The cause of the spill can be a sensitive matter, and at SERVPRO of Palos Verdes we pride ourselves in being professional and empathetic to all remediation and restoration needs. Our trained professionals are discreet and do not go into any details other than what is needed in order to get your home back to its original state.

Asbestos Analysis

1/15/2021 (Permalink)

The Risk of Asbestos

Asbestos is perceived as a health hazard and its use is now highly regulated by both OSHA and EPA. Asbestos fibers related with these health risks are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause a buildup of scar-like tissue in the lungs called asbestosis and result in loss of lung function that often progresses to major disabilities.

Here are some tips to reduce the hazards of working on the cleanup of asbestos:

  1. Making sure you have been properly trained for work with asbestos and understand what is required of you and the plan of work.
  2. Do not eat, smoke or drink in the work area.
  3. Use any equipment provided, including that for personal protection; ensure it is clean and in good working order.
  4. Ensuring asbestos waste is disposed of safely.

SERVPRO of Palos Verdes can be contacted 24 hours, 7 days a week at (424) 570-9900 or email any questions to office@SERVPROpalosverdes.com

2020 has been such a roller coaster of events, but SERVPRO of Palos Verdes still has received exceptional reviews and below is one testimonial of our services.

"I just want you to know that from the very first time that I spoke to you, you were very patient, kind, understanding and answered all my questions. Putting my mind at ease! I know you were dealing with other customers, but you made me feel like as if I was the one and only customer you had. My husband and I evacuated Mansfield, Texas which is 6 hours away from my home.  I have had full trust in you being in my home with being so far away! Then, I met you and you were very  professional yet caring. Thank you for calling me, sending photos of the damage and assuring me that everything is going well in my home. Thank you for making what could've been a stressful time not stressful at all.  I thank God for placing you and your SERVPRO Crew in my life.  May God continue to bless you and your crew.  I hope to see you whenever we can come back and find a place to stay until our home is repaired."

Gratefully Yours,

The Cleanup

11/9/2020 (Permalink)

What happens when there is a need for biohazard cleanup?

When we think of a home cleanup and restoration, we often think of fire or water damage.  Many individuals do not realize that it also encompasses biohazard cleanup, which can be quite dangerous when it comes to the pathogen threat.  Depending on the spill, like blood, remediation could be more than just a cleanup of using hospital grade cleaning agents.  Often, blood leaves a stain which means it might be3 possible that our technicians would have to remove and replace the affected section of wall, floor, or ceiling.

Our trained professional are discreet and do not go into any details other than what is needed in order to het your home back to its original state.

SERVPRO of Palos Verdes is available 24/7 and if there are any questions can be reached at (424) 570-9900.

Mold Vs. Mildew

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

Mold on Furniture Mold Growth on Furniture

Let’s face it – nobody likes to live in dark and dank conditions, where both mold and
mildew abound. It is not only unhealthy for the inhabitants, but it also wreaks a
destructive path across the structure as well as the items within the home like food,
leather shoes and coats. Both mold and mildew are considered types of fungi and it will
help if you are able to tell the difference so that the proper and effective treatment can
be dispensed. Mildew is a type of mold, but the same does not apply in the opposite
direction as not all …

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even in your clothing or family pet.
  • Mold spores live on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow when exposed to water. These mold spores may produce allergies.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be taken care of. Otherwise, the mold will return.
  • Mold has a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Also high indoor humidity can cause mold growth. Always try to keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Palos Verdes can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Summer Time Fun

9/1/2020 (Permalink)

Summer is here!

Summertime in California can be an exciting time, even during a pandemic we are managing to still enjoy the little things we used to. Swimming, Barbecues, and bonfires are amongst the best pastimes enjoyed here in SoCal. While that all seems quite fun, it is important to remember that being cautious is still part of that fun. When participating in such activities like a backyard bonfire or BBQ remember these few tips to ensure a safe and memorable experience:

-Make sure the fire pit is far enough from any home dwelling in an open area (same for the BBQ)

- Make sure only a knowledgeable adult is tending the fire or BBQ

-Do not overexert the fire more than is needed keeping the pile at 5’x5’ to keep the flames containable

- Make sure to have some water source nearby in case the fire gets out of hand

- Do not throw anything into the fire such as aerosols, canisters, or anything that contains foam or paint

- Make sure the wood you are using is dry and seasoned with no coating or anything attached to it

- When done with the bonfire make sure to douse with water and turnover the charred material with a metal shovel

While summer memories are usually great, sometimes there are unexpected situations. Here at SERVPRO of Palos Verdes our trained and professional technicians are equipped to help you during those summertime mishaps.  We want to make sure we get you and your loved ones back at it and having fun as quickly as possible after any kind of unplanned home disaster.

A Few Easy Tips in Keeping your Home Away from Water Damage

Water damage can be costly so in order to protect yourself from any losses or claims:

  1. Clean Gutter and Downsprouts- At least clean your gutters from any blockage twice a year.  Unmanageable overflow may create puddles that could damage the foundation of your home.
  2. Maintenance of trees and vegetation- minimize landscaping near utility pipes of if necessary to remove trees and shrubs that have grown too much. Trees roots can wrap around your pips and break them.
  3. Check your appliances regularly- Check appliances regularly for leaks according to manufacturers directions.
  4. Know your Water Main- Find out the location of your main and shut if off if you leave for an extended amount of time. If no water goes in the house means no faucet drips that can lead to havoc.

Vandalism in a Rancho Palos Verdes store

6/18/2019 (Permalink)

The hole in the wall is how the intruder broke into the store

As many people may know SERVPRO offers tons of different services, this one right here was a special type of job that many people probably have no idea that we are capable of.

This job was caused by an intruder who broke into and vandalized a local Rancho Palos Verdes jewelry store. Detectives had a finger-printing power all over the entire store to try and pick up fingerprints to determine who the intruder was.

Our technicians went in and HEPA vacuumed everything, not only the floors but the walls and ceilings as well. A HEPA filter should trap 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger which makes it extremely powerful.

When SERVPRO of Palos Verdes left the store you would have never known what really went on inside, you would have never known that was just a crime scene and that means our job is finished.

Do not hesitate, call for a quote today.

Does Your Palos Verdes Home Have A Mold Problem

10/24/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Holiday Safety

12/19/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Palos Verdes wants you to keep your home and family safe this holiday season.

Christmas wouldn’t be complete without seasonal decorations such as Christmas trees and twinkling lights. These accessories make the holidays more joyful, but not being cautious when using them can lead to unwanted situations. According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), there are more than double the amount of fires on Christmas Day than on any other day of the year. Here are some ways to prevent fires in your home during the holidays:

  • Choose an artificial Christmas tree instead of a real one, since artificial trees are less likely to start a fire. Make sure the tree is labeled, certified, or identified by the manufacturer as fire retardant.
  • Position trees at a good distance from heat sources, such as radiators and fireplaces.
  • If you use extension cords to light up multiple indoor lights, consider plugging them into a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for extra safety.
  • If you have outdoor decorative lights, ensure that they’re securely fastened to trees, gutters and/or other parts of the home. Use secure clips to prevent the wind from whipping them and lights from breaking.
  • Unattended cooking is the most common culprit of kitchen fires. Never leave food unattended when cooking.
  • Test your smoke detectors before the holidays and be sure to have fire extinguishers ready if a fire starts.
  • Leave one foot of space between candles and anything else and make sure the candle holders or bases are stable. Don’t leave candles burning when you leave the room or going to bed. Always supervise them.
  • If your home has a fireplace, have the chimney inspected and cleaned before using. Place a protective screen around the fireplace to prevent embers from reaching your carpet or other materials.

For professional fire, water and mold restoration services, contact your SERVPRO of Palos Verdes.

Mold 101

10/21/2016 (Permalink)

A minor mold problem can quickly become a major infestation if left untreated.

Mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.

The main things mold needs to grow in a home are organic materials to feed on and moisture. Your home already provides plenty of organic materials for mold to live on such as wood, drywall and various other building materials.

Keep in mind that most molds need 24-48 hours of moisture to begin to grow. Therefore if a suitable material in your home is wet for more than 24 hours then you run the risk of mold starting to grow. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

We live and work in this community too; we might even be neighbors. As a locally owned and operated business, SERVPRO of Palos Verdes is close by and ready to help with your mold-damaged property.

Palos Verdes Smoke and Soot Cleanup

10/19/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home and walls, causing hidden damage and odor. At SERVPRO of Palos Verdes, our smoke/soot damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

 Smoke and soot facts:

  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke:

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Palos Verdes will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services:

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
